Adaptive Re-Use of a Philadelphia Landmark
- Campbell Thomas & Co. (CT&C) collaborated
with Posel Management, the developer and owner, to renovate the
building at the historic site of the first Philadelphia Horn &
Hardart's Automat. The building was repurposed to feature 18
apartments on the upper floors and a medical office on the ground
floor. CT&C worked with the Philadelphia Historical Commission to
introduce a new entryway to the building's historic bronze and glass
storefront, leading to a redesigned lobby, elevator, and
stairway. The original ten-foot-high double-hung windows on the upper
floors were replaced with carefully crafted replicas. Additionally,
the original Automat marquee sign was meticulously restored and
rewired. Apartments feature high ceilings, balconies, wood floors, and
Euro-style kitchens.
